The big U.S. election is today. We’ll elect a new president and weigh in on many other matters at local and state levels.
It’s a chance to have a voice in larger conversations. It’s a chance to try and tilt certain things in a certain direction.
It’s a chance to have a bit of an impact.
But each of us has a chance to have an even bigger impact. Every day.
Consider…
While we ponder these big picture issues and how they relate to us on a personal level, it might also be quite useful to think about the opposite.
What we are doing on a personal level can have a real impact in our own lives. And for those around us. And for those around them.
It’s a powerful way to scale up. Using means totally within our own control.
If You’re Going to Lead
If you are going to lead anything, you first need to lead yourself.
You need to figure out how to get out of your own way. You need to figure out how to unlock more of your potential. You need to figure out how to get to the next level.
Because there is always a next level.
So while you share your voice in the larger scheme of things, be sure that you also take an active stance on things in your own personal context.
Now is a good time to take stock of where you’re at.
You could think about where you want to go. You could identify a step or two that you can take today to get you moving in that direction.
Maybe you want to get fit or eat healthier. Perhaps you want to earn that next promotion. Or attain a professional certification.
You might want to work on a “soft skill” like learning to communicate better…in writing, in person, or via public speaking.
Whatever it is that you might want to do, there are steps you can take. And you should take them.
Now is the right time to get started.
Think Globally, Act Locally
It’s a good time to think about the future. To think about the big picture. To think deeply about the things that are most important to you.
None of that does you–or anybody–a lot of good, though. Unless you take action.
Thinking big is good. But acting small is great.
Doing things in small steps, starting today. Slowly building forward momentum. Decisively heading in a certain direction.
Those small steps matter now, and over time.
Once you’ve voiced your opinion in the larger world on the really big issues of the day, take some time to focus on some really small issues that will lead you in the direction you want to go personally.
Because your personal growth is the foundation of your future greatness. Your future accomplishments. Your future impact.
Take some time and energy to start to work to the next level. Because there is always a next level.
